Art & Second Chances
TMF is working on a project alongside Carolyn Jean’s Son Visions and Early Riser Films, and while that is still in production, this short documentary – Art & Second Chances – tells one aspect of the story we’re working on.
Three organizations – the Alabama Arts Alliance, Leadership Montgomery, and Renascence Inc. – came together to teach art classes to formerly incarcerated men in Montgomery, AL.

March is Arts Education Month
Terrible Master Films recently worked with the Alabama Arts Alliance to produce this video promoting Arts Education Month.
Students and educators from Booker T. Washington Magnet High School and Alabama State University’s Art Department participated in the video.
The mission of the Alabama Arts Alliance is to increase public awareness of and engagement in the arts through education and advocacy.
Special thanks to artist/educator Chintia Kirana and Kress on Dexter for the interview location and Donna Russell of the Alabama Arts Alliance for making this video possible.

‘Remembering Anarcha’ documentary available for pre-order
Remembering Anarcha, a documentary that explores the controversial history of Dr. James Marion Sims and the enslaved African women that were the subjects of his experiments, is available for pre-order through the iTunes store.
Much of the film takes place in Alabama, specifically in Montgomery where Sims conducted experimental surgeries on Anarcha, Lucy, Betsey and about a dozen other women in the late 1840s.
Known as “the father of modern gynecology,” Sims is celebrated with statues at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, the statehouse grounds in Columbia, SC, and previously in New York City’s Central Park. The New York statue was removed in April 2018 due to his controversial legacy of experimenting on enslaved women without anesthesia.
“My producers and I felt this story was important and timely, and we hope it helps to shed more light on the strength and humanity of Anarcha, Lucy, Betsey, and the other women who endured these surgical experiments,” said Josh Carples, the film’s director.
Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, is distributing the film in North American markets.
“Filmmaker Josh Carples has powerfully illuminated a little known story in the dark cannon of the legacies of slavery by focusing on the forgotten, rather than the prominent. By doing so he has given a voice to three women, long thought lost to history, and recognized them for their bravery, humanity and impact on modern medicine,” said Gravitas Ventures Acquisitions Coordinator Megan Huggins.
Remembering Anarcha is set to release on-demand on May 4. Pre-order the film here.
